July 1, 2001 was the date by which all financial institutions were to be in compliance with the provisions and requirements of the Gramm-Leach Bliley (GLB) Act, better known as the new Privacy Law.

Extracted from GLB Act: "Each bank shall implement a comprehensive written information security program that includes administrative, technical, and physical safeguards appropriate to the size and complexity of the bank and the nature and scope of its activities. … A bank's information security program shall be designed to:

2. Protect against any anticipated threats or hazards to the security or integrity of such information; and
3. Protect against unauthorized access to or use of such information that could result in substantial harm or inconvenience to any customer.
