July 1, 2001 was the date by which all financial institutions were to be in compliance with the provisions and requirements of the Gramm-Leach Bliley (GLB) Act, better known as the new Privacy Law.

Most financial institutions believe they have met the deadline simply by preparing and providing privacy policies to all customers and conducting employee training on safeguarding customer information. However, many financial institutions are not aware of the additional requirement of GLB to develop and implement a "comprehensive written information security program".

Extracted from GLB Act: "Each bank shall implement a comprehensive written information security program that includes administrative, technical, and physical safeguards appropriate to the size and complexity of the bank and the nature and scope of its activities. … A bank's information security program shall be designed to:
   1. Ensure the security and confidentiality of customer information;
      2. Protect against any anticipated threats or hazards to the security or integrity of such information; and
         3. Protect against unauthorized access to or use of such information that could result in substantial harm or inconvenience to any customer.

GLB requires each financial institution to adopt security measures appropriate to their computing environment. Directed security measures include Access Controls, Access Encryption, Data Encryption, System Modification Procedures, Dual Controls, Segregation of Duties, Employee Background Checks, Monitoring, Response Programs, Disaster Recovery Planning, and Records Destruction.
