The purpose of a Network Wellness Analysis is to assess the current state of a company's network environment. It begins as a discovery project to disclose and document the components, the topology, and the design of an existing computer network. The data is analyzed to determine the functionality and interaction of the components, and the final product is a document that summarizes the network in a series of charts, graphs and tables that can be used in network oversight and/or management. In a company that is focused on growth or has experienced a fast rate of growth, or is just faced with coping with the dynamic changes in technology, it provides the foundation upon which growth can be both planned and managed, or fragile networks made stable.
Items reviewed include but are not limited to the following:
- Network file server configuration and performance parameters
- Desktop configuration of client workstations
- Network node, traffic and performance
- Current support model and resource requirements
- Basic Security Assessment and boundary definition
- Future application support requirements
- Future network growth requirements
In addition to documentation of findings, the exam includes an evaluation of existing network capacity to support future application requirements and the effect they will have on network planning. The final document is intended to provide the company with a definitive basis for tactical and strategic planning, which are fundamental to a stable network environment for current and future business requirements.
The Wellness Exam is similar in some aspects to an IS audit, however a traditional audit involves a detailed look at procedures and processes that which are not fundamental to a Wellness Exam. The Wellness Exam also covers topics that are not of concern to the IS auditor. It also is not meant to be a full assessment of security for a network. In today's environment, network security is of such importance that it warrants a specific and custom analysis on its own.
